Sanitation, Hygiene and Health among children in India

Children face serious health issues than adults as young people are more prone to environmental hazards. For example, young ones are very vulnerable to the infectious feces of other people lying around in the open defecation due to which they are also infected with diseases. Inadequate sanitation cause a wide range of diseases which are very life threatening. The most deadly are diarrheal diseases which is caused due to poor sanitation conditions and inadequate hygiene. At present, the rural areas are the most affected by poor sanitation. Mainly due to the lack of proper toilets.
According to the latest sources, India has the most number of people defecting in the open, That is almost, half of India's population defecates in the open due to the lack of proper toilet system. Public Health is very important in rural areas which brings about a change in the condition of the community and the nation as whole. Many developing countries lack proper sanitation which hinders the health of the community and the nation.

The health hazards faced by children because of open defecation are diarrhoea, typhoid, cholera, and intestinal infections. We must bring an end to open defecation. It will bring significant improvement in the child health and immense benefits to the society.

Let us try to understand the reason behind the lack of good sanitation. People living in the rural areas are not well educated to know about sanitation and hygiene is which is the root cause of many health problems. We must take the initiative to bring knowledge and awareness among the people regarding sanitation and hygiene. We must educate them to use toilets, wash hands after defecation and maintain a clean toilet for each household in the community.

I have personally seen the problem in the villages surrounding my college where we did camping. We had a chance to educate them about personal hygiene, sanitation and its impact on their health. We learnt the lack of a toilet and spend our pocket money to help them build a toilet which I am proud of always. So, I wish many try to help the community around them like this which makes the nation a better place.

In many cases, even after awareness, people are not able to construct toilets for their household because of the lack of money, affordability and space constraint. They are not ready to use the public toilets in their community because of
  • The available toilets lack water supply.
  • The toilets are filthy, smelly and dirty.
  • The toilets lack electric supply and is not safe.
  • The toilets are far away from the household and is not safe for girls to go alone at night.
  • Cultural practice for going to toilet in the open air.
So, these initiatives we should all contribute to bring changes in our society. Investments in improving proper sanitation will not only build a healthy child but also help in the development of the nation. We must continue in every possible way to bring awareness to improve sanitation.

Let us join hands with Domex's initiative to support and help malnourished children to recover through improved sanitation and hygiene.

About Domex initiative, it currently runs Domex Toilet Academy which aims to provide a long term solution to give sanitation that helps the community which in turns helps stimulate the local economy. Through this initiative, DOMEX makes toilets accessible to the rural community which benefits the children and the community they live in.

Let us contribute our part by clicking DOMEX, "You can bring about changes in the lives of millions of kids, thereby showing the support of domex initiative. All you need to do is click on the contribute tab on www.domex.in and Domex will contribute Rs. 5 on your part to eradicate open defecation, thereby helping kids like Babli live a dignified life"
