Method of Preparation:

1. Cut the vazhakkai on both sides and pressure cook for 1 whistle in medium heat with enough water to immerse and switch off immediately. Open after the pressure releases. remove the boiled vazhakkai from water and allow it to cool.(Or you can pressure cook for 2-3 whistles and switch off. Then release the pressure and remove the boiled vazhakkai from the water). Remove the skin of vazhakkai.

2. Prepare the other ingredients and keep it ready. Grate the vazhakkai using a slicer mandolin having fine grater. Heat oil in a kadhai, temper the items under "To Temper".
3. Add onions and saute till it turns golden brown. Add salt. Add coconut and mix well. Then add the grated vazhakkai and mix well. Saute for 3-4 minutes in low heat. Remove from heat.

Notes:

  • Instead of pressure cooking the raw banana, you can also boil it in a pan for 10 minutes.
  • Make sure you don't overcook the vazhakkai, then it becomes mashy and can't be grated.
  • Use freshly grated coconut.
